Molokini Crater is a crescent-shaped volcanic caldera about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore. The partially submerged cinder cone is home to over 250 different species of reef fish and hundreds of species of coral which follows the contours of the lava flow, some of which are found only in Hawai’i. Visibility is about 40-60 feet depending on weather conditions. A trip to the crater is a wonderful snorkel experience for beginners or experts, and a must-do activity for any visitor to Maui.
Coral Gardens is a natural reef formation that is home to hundreds of Hawaiian fish species. In these waters you can view parrotfish, angel fish, trigger fish, and butterflyfish. Crabs, octopus and sea turtles also make their homes here. It is protected from the wind by the West Maui Mountains and has an abundance of secret coral caves and passageways. The crystal clear transparency of the water paired with depths from shallow to medium make it a favorite spot of visitors and residents alike.
Olowalu Reef is one of Hawaii’s most unique ocean reef systems, consisting of over 100 acres of some of the oldest reef structures in the Hawaiian islands. It’s large coral heads are hundreds of years old. It is home to a Manta Ray and Turtle cleaning station. Its calm and clear waters make it one of the best beginners’ snorkeling spots on Maui.
